I must admit that when Remembrance Day comes around every year I mostly think about my grandfather. He was my only real connection to war and to the understanding of the sacrifices made by many to serve our country. War experiences were rarely discussed (and we were too scared to ask) but the sense of duty and to stand up for what is right was felt throughout the family. Although grandpa died over ten years ago, most of my memories of him revolve around spending time together during the summer at the cabin – swimming, boating, projects and playing games – trying to match up to his skills and intellect. I am grateful for the these times and for the wisdom he had in making island life part of his family’s life. Peace.
